The Roman de Silence is a medieval romance with a difference. In the 13th century a mysterious author wrote a little-known knightly adventure about a woman brought up as a man. For as long as she can remember, our heroine, Silence, has been treated, dressed, and thought of as a boy, and when she grows up she becomes the best knight in England. Although Nature made her a perfect woman, Nurture has made her a perfect man and knight. The question our author is playing with, in making his "perfect knight" a woman, is this: Are men and women different because of nature, or because of nurture? This site is dedicated to the memory of John Fleagle. "Teaching and Tea" is sponsored by the Feminist Humanities Project. Please check our Web site for schedule and background information. As you explore the six content areas of the Roman de Silence website, you will find the "Table of Contents" on the left of the screen to give you easy access to each area represented on this site. This page was developed by Dr. Regina Psaki, in collaboration with the Wired Humanities Project, for a demonstration at the CSWS "Teaching and Tea" seminar, held on February 9, 2000. This site will serve as both a collection and dissemination point for teaching materials (images, classroom activities, syllabi) developed during the collaborative portion of the "Teaching and Tea" seminar following Dr. Psaki's presentation. If you have questions, comments or suggestions, you may e-mail Dr. Psaki! |
