Bothriolepis canadensis In the exhibit above, several B. canadensis have been fossilized along with a well-preserved Archaeopteris obtusa leaf. In the bottom photos, two of the fish specimens have been removed to reveal an as-yet unidentified structure that was underneath the specimen with the tail. Most Placoderm fossils contain only the head portion of the fish, as it was covered in bony plates while the tail-section, being soft tissue, rarely is preserved. Below is an artist's rendition of what Bothriolepis may have looked like in life. Sorrento hôtels It is thought by some scientists that these fish had primitive lungs and that the joints that appear on the bony pectoral "fins" might have been used to help the fish crawl out on land or very shallow water.
