Ummmmmm . . .
What's a Scrapbook?

You know all those neat things in your room the grownups are always trying to get you to throw away? We have an idea to help convince your folks to let you keep them: put 'em in a scrapbook! A scrapbook is a big-paged book you stick things into: extra photos, magazine pictures, sports cards and anything flat.

A serious scrapbook includes only archival-quality materials. That means they are acid-free and will last a long, long time. Ask your mom or dad for help in deciding what's archival quality. Some scrapbooks are just for fun. They may not last forever, but they're fun to show off.

Once you make a scrapbook, you can look at it anytime you feel like it. You can keep it hidden away . . . or show it to everybody you know. What would you put in yours?

Things to Put in Scrapbooks
(some silly, some serious!)
Gum wrappers, snake skins, locks of hair, lipstick kisses and fingerprints on paper, love letters, leaves, bottle caps, feathers, candy wrappers, skipper rocks, string, friends' pictures, coins, deflated balloons, popcan tabs, dried flowers, pogs, frog lips, heart aches, sports cards, bandaids, bookmarks, treasure maps, homemade game boards, drawings of monsters and unicorns, playing cards, mom's business cards, birthday cards, paper clips, names of books you've read, short stories, pictures of places you've been, coasters, cartoons, dead bugs, doll clothes, beads, brochures from tours, fabric scraps, stickers, matchbook covers, hotel key cards, wallpaper, cereal box tops, takeout menus, butterflies, pocket calendars, ribbons and lace, newspaper stories, sports schedules, friendship bracelets, washers and keys, rubber bands, stamps, mini state flags, numbers, letters, names, bumper stickers, signatures, designer tags and buttons. . . WHEW! What can you think of?

Getting Started: How to Make a Scrapbook
You can make a scrapbook just like your mom's or dad's! Here's what you need.
...Something for the outside. You can ask your parents to help you pick out your own real archival-quality scrapbook binder. Or use your imagination and do a scrapbook just for fun! You could use a spiral notebook, a blank book or make your own. Try making pages from brown paper sacks or pasting newspaper articles on the outside cover. Make covers from construction paper, cardboard or plastic sheets. Punch holes and tie everything together with yarn or cool shoestrings.
...Something to put inside. You could snap your own photos or get extra ones from your parents. Save flat things like napkins, postcards & letters, can labels, stamps, school papers, strings and photocopies of your favorite book covers. What other flat things could you use?
...Something to decorate the pages. Use stickers, draw your own pictures, cut out pictures from magazines and stick them on. Experiment with fancy lettering done with markers or colored pencils. Draw your own versions of cartoons. What else?!!!
...One last thing . . . You need an idea! Your scrapbook can be about anything you want: pets, school, friends, collections, vacations, family events, people or hobbies. The list never ends!
