DATES TOUR PRICE

10-17 July 1999 $1089.00
18-25 September 1999 $1089.00
Single room supplement $110.00
OVERVIEW:
Our tour starts at Ardlui on the "Bonnie banks" of Loch Lomond, famed in song and story. We take the tiny ferry across the loch to the untamed Craigroyston shore, once the home of the outlaw Rob Roy MacGregor, and before him the refuge of Scotland's patriot king, Robert the Bruce. From the lochshore we accompany the tumbling River Falloch into the spacious country where the three kingdoms of Picts, Scots, and Britons once met. We follow the West Highland Way, Scotland's premier long-distance footpath, along the 250-year old track built by General Wade in his attempt to bring peace and prosperity to the Highlands. From Bridge of Orchy we pass Loch Tulla to cross the wild Rannoch Moor and spend two nights at the remote Kingshouse Hotel, one of Scotland's oldest droving inns. We follow the old road below towering peaks to Glencoe, scene of the slaughter of the Clan MacDonald in 1692 and cross the Devil's Staircase to Kinlochleven. Our final day takes us through the Lairig Mor to descend to the sea at Ballachulish with panoramic views over the Lochaber Hills. We stop in country hotels and inns along the route. This walk travels through an area with no towns, so you are recommended to bring sufficient cash for the holiday.
CLOTHING:
The weather in Scottish hills can change quickly so it is essential to bring a strong waterproof cagoule (hiking jacket). Jackets that are only `showerproof' and capes are NOT suitable. Cotton/Wool trousers (or better still, specialist hiking trousers) are desirable in the climate, and jeans are NOT suitable. We also recommend waterproof overtrousers which have zips in the legs so that they can be pulled on and off without the need to remove your boots. Even on sunny days there is often a strong wind which can cool the body quickly so you should bring a warm jumper & hat. We recommend some protective cream as the combination of sun and wind can dry the skin quickly. An effective midge repellent would be useful. Your luggage must be restricted to one suitcase or similar. Please remember if you can't lift the suitcase up stairs without injury, then it would be best to reduce the items packed.

HOTEL: Morar Hotel, Morar, Mallaig, Inverness-shire, PH40 4PA.
Accommodation is in twin, double, or single rooms, all with private facilities.

24-31 July 1999 $865.00
11-18 September 1999 $865.00
Single room supplement  - none
OVERVIEW:
The Morar Hotel, with its spectacular setting, sits on the rocky waterfront. After the rout of his army at Culloden in 1746, the acobite leader Bonnie Prince Charlie fled to the West Highlands hotly pursued by government troops. Little has changed since the Redcoats hounded the fugitive over this wild scenery, where a stunning view across the white sands to the Hebridean Isles of Eigg and Rum suggests that the fabled land of Tir nan Og hovers on the horizon. From the tiny bays of Morar and Mallaig we walk over small but rugged mountains that tumble down into ancient gnarled woodlands and cloud-dappled lochs. We walk the wild shores of Loch Morar, where filming took place for the recent Rob Roy epic, and return by boat along Loch Nevis where seals and porpoises cavort. We cross over the sea to Skye, where Flora MacDonald sheltered the Prince, and listen to the story of the Lords of the Isles in Armadale Castle. Down by Loch nan Uamh, we trace the twists and turns of the Duke's Path along the intricate shoreline to discover the secret hideout of Prince Charlie's Cave. Inland we follow stalkers' paths to tiny lochans, descending to pass lone Shielings abandoned amongst the heather.
