STICKER PLANET was launched in August 1997 by Bernie and Selma Kraft, their children Hilary and Richard, and partner Heidi Geffen. The inspiration to launch a sticker catalog came from the success the senior Krafts, and partner Geffen, enjoyed in two retail stores they owned and operated -- B.A. Stamper and Stickermadness. B.A. Stamper opened in 1991 in the Santa Monica Place shopping center in Santa Monica, California. At first it was primarily an artistic rubber stamp store that also sold some stickers. However, the stickers proved so popular that soon over half the space in the store was devoted to them. The success of stickers at B.A. Stamper prompted the trio to open their second store, Stickermadness, which was devoted entirely to stickers. This second store opened in 1992, located in the historic Farmer's Market retail center in Los Angeles. Both stores, which now also operate under the name STICKER PLANET, offer a selection of over 1,400 different sticker designs. (Additionally, the Santa Monica store opened a major new scrapbooking department last year and offers designer papers and supplies, classes, workshops and demonstrations on scrapbooking, photo albums and sticker art.) When the time came to think about expanding again, the Krafts and Geffen decided not to launch a third store but rather to market stickers via mail order and the world wide web. In this way, they could bring their enjoyment of stickers to a much broader audience. To help undertake this task, Richard and Hilary joined their parents and Geffen in the venture. Says partner Bernie Kraft, "We worked on the concept for over a year before launching it. It was important to us to put out a top quality catalog that people would enjoy and have fun reading." STICKER PLANET offers its 68-page, full color catalog for $5.00. Included in the purchase price is a $5.00 coupon redeemable with the first order. The catalog features over 350 acid and lignin-free stickers, as well as an array of sticker-related products. Also included in the price of the catalog is a 28-page "How To" guide that offers 'recipes' for the many sticker projects seen in the catalog, plus decoupaged bottles, stationery, picture frames, party bags, carrying cases, bookmarks and stickered school supplies. By purchasing a STICKER PLANET catalog, customers (who the company refers to as 'citizens') will automatically be sent all of the companies follow up catalogs for free. In addition, STICKER PLANET has its own site on the world wide web (www.stickerplanet.com) where catalogs may be purchased and 'citizens' can shop and place their stickers orders. The site allows browsers to view instructions for new projects or get ideas for activities such as setting up a child's birthday-sticker party.
