_Van Ministry

On a daily basis, our vans are offering the service of a free blood pressure screening on crowded New York City streets to help people gain an awareness of the dangers of unhealthy lifestyle choices and to recognize undetected high blood pressure. As one enters into the van, they are asked to fill out a questionnaire that will later be used to identify what simple lifestyle changes they can make can give thema healthier and longer life. Some questions read for example, "How many cups of coffee do you drink?/Do you frequently exercise?" As they wait in the waiting area, they are free to sample and take free health & Christian literature that may be of interest to them. We also ask them if they are interested in ever attending Stop Smoking Seminars, Stress Control Clinics, Nutrition Workshops and Vegetarian Cooking Classes that a local Adventist church might host. This way, they can be among the first notified of any such special event.

The receptionist soon invites the person to enter into the office, where a blood pressure technician is ready. After taking a reading (or two), he/she explains what the numbers mean. If the pressure is rather high, they are advised to go to their doctor in the very near future. The technician also looks over the person's application and points out possible hypertension-risk areas. Any helpful health booklets or inspirational booklets are also made available on a nearby table. Some of these include, "You Can Stop Smoking", etc...

We advocate the simple exercise of walking and to drink at least 8 glasses of water daily will improve your health, both physically and emotionally. We advise moderation and believe in exercising self-control in the indulgence of appetite and abstinence from alcohol. Flip through our online newsletters for some of the exciting stories from our vans.

_Food and Clothing Distribution

In keeping with the Biblical counsel found in Isaiah 58, Adventist Community Services has been bringing food and clothing to the homeless community in New York City. Our warehouse contains a store of donating clothing which we freely distribute on select occasions to those in need. Near the holidays, we also prepare bagged lunches and soups which we then take to the streets.
